Irish Water, in partnership with Wicklow County Council and ByrneLooby, marked the development of a new state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant that will provide wastewater treatment for the first time in the community of Arklow.
The sod-turning ceremony was led by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O'Brien and Cllr. Shay Cullen, Cathaoirleach of the County Council, Conor Delaney Project Manager for Irish Water and Programme Managers Paul Fallon and John Joyce. On behalf of ByrneLooby, our Managing Director of Water and the Middle East - Michael Looby attended with Sinead Carey, Associate Director of Water.

When completed, this landmark project will provide an effective wastewater collection network, a water treatment plant (36,000 P.E. Population Equivalent) and treated effluent outfall. This scheme will deliver numerous benefits to the region and ensures that sewage will no longer be discharged into the Avoca River and the Irish Sea. Ecological benefits include compliance with EU Legislative requirements, protecting the environment and improving water quality for angling, water sports and marine life. Economically, this scheme enables new housing development and facilitates the economic growth and development of Arklow town. Irish Water is procuring this project under a Design-Build Operate contract with an anticipated project programme of four years.
