This year we have achieved two shortlists for the Ground Engineering Awards 2022. Design engineer Jack Green has been nominated and shortlisted for the Rising Star category. Our second shortlist includes our Wadhurst Cutting project (joint submission with BAM Ritches, and BAM Nuttall) led by geotechnical director Chris Gough, Jack Green and the Guildford team. Our parent company Ayesa has also achieved a shortlist under the Geotechnical team of the year for their work on the Silvertown Tunnel (joint submission with Cowi, Riverlinx CJV).
1. Rising Star AwardThis is for UK-based geotechnical/geoenvironmental engineers with up to five years of industry experience, who have shown innovative thinking, astute business acumen, made a significant contribution to a project, or demonstrated technical ability through research.
They will be judged on all-round ability - not only academic and work-related achievements - but also their enthusiasm for geotechnical or geo-environmental engineering.
Jack is a Design Engineer with four and a half years in the industry. Graduating with a Master's in Engineering Geology in 2017, Jack spent two years with XEIAD as an Assistant Engineer assisting infrastructure examinations. In 2019, He led investigations for the Byrnelooby/Ayesa team on Runcorn Bridge and the M25 critical infrastructure package. As a result of his hard work, creativity, and initiative, he was promoted to Design Engineer within nine months. Jack takes a proactive approach to his role and has introduced several new initiatives/ideas that have increased efficiencies for colleagues at ByrneLooby/Ayesa.
2. UK Project with a Geotechnical Value over £3M - Wadhurst Cutting London End
This is for a ground engineering scheme (as a standalone project or part of a larger development) with a contract value of over £3M that stands out in terms of its credentials in innovation, sustainability, health and safety, and value engineering. The entrant must explain and provide evidence to demonstrate what exceptional measures were taken or innovative techniques were used to result in the project being delivered above the expected standard. A key element in deciding the winner will be the contribution of the entrant to the overall delivery of a project.
Entry - Wadhurst Cutting London End
3. UK Geotechnical Team of the year
This award is open to any multi-company collaborative project team involved in the UK geotechnical industry either on a specific project or as part of a framework on multiple projects. To be successful the project team should demonstrate the team culture which led to improved project delivery, the project team's mutual goals, and joint activities highlighting outstanding performance.
Entry - Silvertown Tunnel
Ayesa was appointed as the lead designer for the Riverlinx CJV consortium of Ferrovial, BAM PPP PGGM, SK Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd, who will collectively deliver this inspiring 1.4km twin-bore road tunnel under the river Thames – the first for London in over 30 years, with an estimated capital cost of 1,400million euros. Ayesa's geotechnical team headed by Robert Sizer is responsible for the design of the geotechnical and structural design of the temporary and permanent works of the cut and cover tunnels, three massive complex TBM shafts, portal structures and open-cut structures. The new infrastructure will connect Silvertown to East London, helping to eliminate the environmental impacts of traffic pollution, and traffic congestion and aid better connectivity across the capital city to new residential developments and communities.
