Finalists in two awards for Ground Engineering 2024

26th March 2024: We are proud to announce we are finalists in two categories of the Ground Engineering Awards 2024.  Each of the shortlisted teams will present to the judges in the coming weeks to talk about their project and why it is a worthy winner.  We wish David Jowett, Technical Director, Rob Turner, Associate Director, Kelly Scott, Head of Learning & Development, and the entire teams in Guildford and Manchester the best of luck with the June awards in London.

The following are the two projects shortlisted for awards

1. UK project with a geotechnical value of between £1 and £3 million: This award recognises a scheme with a contract value of up to 3 million that showcases sustainability innovation, Health & Safety, quality, and value engineering

Client: J Murphy & Sons, Network Rail
Value: £3million
Project Name: Aylesbury Culvert
Sector: Geoscience

Ayesa wishes to extend its congratulations to our Ayesa geotechnical and structural engineering teams in the UK, in partnership with J Murphy & Sons and Network Rail on the Aylesbury Culvert project which has been announced as a finalist in this year's awards.  What makes this project a worthy finalist is its innovation, collaboration, and environmental stewardship

This project was not just about replacing a Victorian drainage culvert that was challenging due to its unique location, lying beneath the railway tracks in Aylesbury; it was a demonstration of excellence in sustainable engineering and collaborative problem-solving.  Faults in the old culvert were causing repeated, short-notice line closures, disrupting commuters and freight services. Faced with the partial failure of a Victorian-era culvert, the team, led by J Murphy & Sons, Ayesa, and Network Rail, not only expedited a temporary fix but also engineered a permanent, future-proof solution. This swift, accident-free completion, 12 hours ahead of schedule, introduced a modern precast concrete structure designed to last 120 years, that would enhance local biodiversity.

Within a tight 12-day window, Network Rail, Murphy, and Ayesa delivered a solution that not only rectified the immediate issue but set new standards. An 18-section pre-cast concrete culvert was installed using a 300-tonne crane, and 700 meters of rail along with 85 sleepers were replaced, upgrading three sets of points to ensure the railway's resilience against flooding and extreme weather events.  Features like rock rolls, coir rolls, and Flex MSE retaining walls demonstrate the project's commitment to environmental stewardship, and close collaboration with agencies, aiming to enhance biodiversity and manage water flow to mitigate flood risks amidst climate change challenges. We extend our congratulations to all involved and wish our project partners the very best of luck in the awards!
