Doha, 30th Jul 2020 - Qatar Rail’s Doha Metro has won the CIHT (The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation) International Project Award 2020.   This was the first time, CIHT opened the awards to international projects. The judging panel awarded it to the Doha Metro in recognition of its project excellence across planning, design, implementation and execution phases, citing in particular, their vision, innovative design, stakeholder engagement as well as the inclusion of sustainable and environmental solutions into the project.  The Management Team at ByrneLooby wishes to congratulate the Geotechnical, BIM and engineering design teams who worked on the Doha Metro, providing engineering and geotechnical design services during phase 1 of the Red and Green lines.

ByrneLooby were commissioned to provide engineering design solutions for the more complex parts of the project on both red and green metro lines: i.e., the shafts to accommodate the tunnel boring machines, the geotechnical design of the deep station boxes and the design of the temporary diversions and the permanent utility connections on the green line.

The Red Line package extended between the Masheirab underground station and Doha International airport and required two emergency shaft exits which were 34 metres deep and 46 metres in diameter. The ByrneLooby team provided geotechnical design and engineering for the diaphragm walls, ring beams, counter and tympan walls and soft eye diaphragm wall panels of the temporary shafts which accommodated the tunnel boring machine.  This complex project required that the diaphragm included 3D geotechnical and structural modelling of the shafts, as well as instrumentation and modelling plans, which demonstrate our expertise and ability to add value across projects; providing innovative solutions that optimise health and safety and project success.

When a joint venture undertook the Green Line build, ByrneLooby was appointed to provide engineering design services for the temporary utility diversions and the permanent utility connections. This required in-depth research, assessments and Building Information Modelling (BIM). The ByrneLooby role included: feasibility studies, capacity analysis, diversionary assessments, unchartered services investigations, wayleave and utility searches, utility diversion detailed design, information maps and overlays and BIM 3D modelling for the utility diversions.  These ByrneLooby services helped to improve project outcomes, produce higher quality work, increase productivity, strengthen project co-ordination and communication with stakeholders on the Doha Metro.

The Doha Metro can reach 100km/h and is considered one of the fastest driverless trains in the world, serving a population of almost one million people. It consists of mostly underground track and has already provided positive benefits for the local communities: including linkage with Doha International Airport, decreasing traffic and car pollution, affordable travel and shortened commuting times.

The Doha Metro is a remarkable project,” said Michael Looby, Managing Director, Middle East and Water Divisions. “ByrneLooby is proud to have played a part in this award-winning development which will enhance the quality of life for the communities of Qatar, now and into the future. It leaves a legacy not only for the community of Doha, Qatar’s capital city but also for the global engineering community, showcasing how engineering and design can inspire, innovate and contribute to green cities.”
