Al Dur IWPP Phase 2

Al Dur IWPP Phase 2

The Kingdom of Bahrain's Electricity and Water Authority (IEWA) is proposing to develop the second phase of the Independent Water and Power Plant to meet the growing population and current and future demand for electricity and potable water supply.

The Phase 2 of the Independent Water and Power Plant (IWPP2) will comprise of a combined cycle natural gas turbine and a seawater reverse osmosis desalination plant. The Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) plant separates dissolved salts from the seawater through the process of reverse osmosis to generate non-salty, potable water that is fit for household use. The thermal and brine effluent will be discharged to the sea through the existing seawater outfall at Al Dur Phase I.

Al Dur IWPP Phase 2

Our Role

Ayesa was appointed by 5 Capitols, through EWA and ACWA Power, to undertake site based surveys as well as a thermal, brine and residual chlorine dispersion modelling study for the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the construction of the Al Dur Independent Water and Power Plant Phase 2 (IWPP2) in Bahrain. The site surveys included terrestrial ecology surveys, noise and air quality monitoring, bathymetry and geotechnical investigations. These investigations determined the baseline environmental conditions. A thermal, brine and residual chlorine dispersion modelling study was conducted to assess the of compliance of the Al Dur Phase 2 discharge as well as the effluent discharge from the salt water reverse osmosis (SWRO) plant into the marine environment in compliance with Bahrain and World Bank Environmental Standards.
