Carrigtohill Flood Mitigation Measures

Carrigtohill Flood Mitigation measures (FMM) is a €3.7 million project to mitigate flood risk in strategic developments lands owned and operated by IDA Ireland, Ireland’s national foreign direct investment agency. The Carrigtohill landholding extended to c.54 hectares and the site is zoned for large stand-alone high quality industrial development of regional or national economic importance.

The scheme commenced in early 2018 and is due for completion in Q3 2019. The scheme includes maintenance river cleaning, flood defence embankments, stormwater drainage infrastructure and a 1500mm diameter storm overflow pipe which drains to a 48,000 cubic meter attenuation system, which restricts flows downstream and protects IDA clients in the park.

Carrigtohill Flood Mitigation Measures

Our Role

Ayesa in Cork were appointed to manage the scope of services which included hydro-logical studies and assessments, hydraulic modelling of flood flows in the watercourses, examination of flood risk management options and selection of preferred option. Ayesa Cork prepared all planning documentation and successfully submitted the planning to Cork County Council Planning was granted within 8 weeks, further a request for further information. Subsequently, Ayesa carried out the geotechnical and structural design for the flood defenses. This included design and specification of reinforced concrete chambers, flood defence embankments, design of an integrated attenuation pond and underground tank system with an automated flow controlled outlet arrangement. Close liaison and agreement was necessary with Irish Rail and Irish Water as both stakeholders have significant assets adjoining or affected by the works.
