Kuwait Contaminated Soil Repository

Kuwait Contaminated Soil Repository

The Kuwait Contaminated Soil Repository project was part of the major clean-up of oil-contaminated soils which were a legacy of the 1991 Iraq war. When retreating from Kuwait, the Iraqi army destroyed hundreds of oil wells contaminating over 25 million cubic metres of soil. Under the auspices of the United Nations, a clean-up programme was initiated which involved a mix of bioremediation, thermal treatment and landfilling. Our team were appointed the lead design engineers for the construction of the 1 million tonne capacity repository, located in the oilfields to the south of Kuwait City. The contract was let by the Kuwait Oil Company under the Kuwait Environmental Remediation Programme (KERPS) scheme, as a design and build project.

Our Role

As part of our role our team provided comprehensive construction support to our D&B client which included preliminary field trips, supervision of site investigations, environmental monitoring, full-time site-based supervision and QA of the earthworks and geosynthetics installations and attendance at meetings with KOC and their PMC (AMEC/Wood).

We initially provided tender support to our client who was able to win the D&B contract in the face of stiff international competition. In addition to our construction support role, we also undertook a site selection study, design of the site investigations, hydrogeological studies, geotechnical studies, engineering design and specification of the soil repository, leachate management design, gas control design, surface water design, construction supervision, Construction Quality Assurance (CQA) and preparation of the operational, monitoring and post-closure plans. The work was undertaken in two phases, the first to construct the base of the repository and then a year later, after the repository was infilled, to cap and restore the site.
