Newark Waste & Water Improvement Project

It is proposed to upgrade and upsize the sewers beneath many of the roads in Newark and install a new 3.5m diameter 3km long sewer through the town that will allow the new system to discharge when it reaches capacity, without flooding local domestic properties. The new sewers have been constructed using TBM techniques, requiring deep launch and reception shafts. The deep circular shafts were constructed using secant piling techniques, with Murphy Ground Engineering Ltd. completing the piling works, with BNM Alliance responsible for the main works.

Our Role

Ayesa were tasked by our client Murphy Ground Engineering to carry out the design of the 16m and 21m deep circular shafts. We successfully developed efficient design solutions minimising temporary support requirements and we rationalised the TBM entry and exit solutions which included unreinforced soft-eyes braced with internal portals.

Our Role

As the 21m deep shaft was constructed in close proximity to two live Network Rail lines, detailed analyses were required to predict expected ground movements during the excavation and construction of the shaft. Ayesa collaborated closely with the overall works designers, GHD, to develop an early warning movement monitoring system to inform construction operations and thus mitigate the risk of ground movement occurring at the live Network Rail lines.
