Bank Primark Buildings secures two Awards
Exciting news in the world of architecture as Bank Buildings, a Grade B1-listed Victorian department store, secures a well-deserved award from Architects Journal for its remarkable restoration.
An icon of Belfast is restored to its former glory and given a facelift for the future
The winners were revealed for the AJ Architecture Awards 2023 this week and Bank Buildings was pronounced a worthy winner as one of the projects of the year for restoration. Read more about our role in this project here.
Ayesa, a global provider of technology and engineering services was appointed by Primark to restore a local icon of Belfast when it was ravaged by fire back in 2018. Client Primark's decision to embark on a £100 million restoration instead of opting for demolition and redevelopment showcases a commitment to preserving the cultural heritage of the local landmark. The result is a stunning blend of modern functionality and historic charm, providing increased retail accommodation, including a spectacular top floor with views of the building's distinctive clockface.
Judges applauded the 'astonishing' ingenuity in breathing new life into this historic retail building located in the heart of Belfast. The restoration not only overcame highly complex technical challenges at an impressive speed but also adhered to 'tremendously' high sustainability standards, earning the admiration of the panel.
The meticulous restoration of dressed sandstone, granite, and brickwork, coupled with the integration of new energy-efficient elements, stood out to the judges. The addition of significant levels of insulation and double-glazing not only improved energy performance but also contributed to a 30% reduction in energy use, reflected in the restored building's impressive EPC rating of B.
